About the Assessment

What is an ADHD Assessment?

An ADHD assessment is a structured process designed to evaluate whether a person's symptoms are consistent with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Formal clinical assessments are carried out by qualified specialists — psychiatrists, specialist paediatricians or CAMHS professionals — and result in an official diagnosis. Our online assessment is a clinically informed screening tool, not a clinical diagnosis.

Our assessment is based on DSM-5 criteria and the WHO Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS v1.1). It covers 20 symptom domains including attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, emotional regulation, time management, working memory, sleep, self-esteem and more. A high score indicates that a professional assessment may be warranted — it does not confirm a diagnosis.

It is designed for adults and teenagers who want to better understand their symptom profile before deciding whether to pursue a formal clinical assessment. It takes approximately 18 minutes to complete and provides instant results with no waiting time.

FAQs

Common ADHD Assessment Questions

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about ADHD assessments. For a full list of questions covering ADHD symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and more, visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.

How do I know if I need an ADHD assessment? +

You may want an ADHD assessment if ongoing difficulties with focus, organisation, impulsivity, restlessness or emotional regulation are significantly affecting your daily life. Common signs include chronic forgetfulness, struggling to finish tasks, poor time management, losing important items, feeling mentally overwhelmed, or finding that work, study, relationships or family life are harder to manage than they should be. Assessment is especially worth considering when the difficulties are persistent, have been present for years and are not fully explained by stress, anxiety, depression or sleep problems.

  • adhd assessmentConsider assessment if symptoms are persistent and disruptive
  • adhd assessment UKADHD usually affects more than one part of life
  • adhd assessment united statesCommon reasons include focus, organisation and time-management problems
  • adhd assessment spainOnline screening can suggest whether further assessment is sensible
  • adhd assessment gibraltarA specialist can help decide whether ADHD is the best explanation
What happens during an ADHD assessment? +

During an ADHD assessment, the specialist gathers a detailed history and explores how symptoms affect day-to-day life. The clinician will ask about concentration, impulsivity, restlessness, routines, emotional regulation, organisation and whether these difficulties started in childhood. Questionnaires or rating scales are often included, and some services may also ask for school reports, parent or teacher forms, or an informant account from someone who knows the person well. The overall purpose is to build a well-rounded picture rather than rely on one symptom list alone.

  • adhd assessment franceThe assessment includes a detailed clinical history
  • adhd assessment germanyIt looks at current symptoms and earlier life
  • adhd assessment australiaIt often covers work, school, family and relationships
  • adhd assessment uaeQuestionnaires and outside information may be included
  • adhd assessmentsThe specialist is building a full picture, not ticking a single box
Who carries out an ADHD assessment? +

An ADHD assessment should be carried out by a qualified specialist with expertise in diagnosing ADHD. Adult assessments are usually done by a psychiatrist or adult ADHD specialist. Children and teenagers may be assessed by a paediatrician or a child and adolescent psychiatrist. Multidisciplinary neurodevelopmental teams may also be involved. What matters most is not simply the job title, but the person's training and competence in ADHD diagnosis and management.

  • adhd assessment UKADHD assessments are done by trained specialists
  • adhd assessment united statesAdults are often assessed by a psychiatrist or adult ADHD specialist
  • adhd assessment spainChildren may be assessed by a paediatrician or child psychiatrist
  • adhd assessment gibraltarMultidisciplinary teams may also be involved
  • adhd assessment franceSpecialist expertise is important because ADHD can overlap with other conditions
How long does an ADHD assessment take? +

A formal ADHD assessment is usually longer than a simple screening test because it needs to be comprehensive. Adult diagnostic appointments may last anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes to several hours, and some services spread the process over more than one appointment. The length depends on age, complexity, and whether extra reports are needed. A proper ADHD assessment should feel thorough rather than rushed. Our online screening assessment takes approximately 18 minutes.

  • adhd assessment germanyAssessment length varies between services
  • adhd assessment australiaIt may take one long appointment or more than one session
  • adhd assessment uaeMore complex cases may need extra time or extra information
  • adhd assessmentsA full assessment is much longer than an online screening quiz
  • adhd assessment UKIt should feel thorough and careful, not rushed
Is the assessment done online or in person? +

ADHD assessments can be carried out online, in person, or using a combination of both, depending on the service. Some NHS and specialist services now offer video consultations for part or all of the assessment process. NICE guidance focuses on the quality and completeness of the assessment rather than insisting on one single format — meaning an online assessment can still be clinically valid if done properly by a trained specialist.

  • adhd assessment united statesAssessments may be online, face-to-face, or mixed
  • adhd assessment spainVideo appointments are used by some NHS and specialist services
  • adhd assessment gibraltarForms are often completed before or alongside the appointment
  • adhd assessment franceOnline does not automatically mean less valid
  • adhd assessment germanyThe essential point is that the assessment is specialist-led and thorough
Will I need to fill in questionnaires or rating scales? +

In most cases, yes. Questionnaires and rating scales are commonly used as part of ADHD assessment because they help gather information in a structured and consistent way. These tools can be useful for identifying symptom patterns, but NICE guidance makes clear that they are only one part of the process — they do not diagnose ADHD by themselves. For children, teachers and parents may be asked to complete forms. For adults, a partner or family member may sometimes add observations.

  • adhd assessment australiaQuestionnaires are commonly used in ADHD assessment
  • adhd assessment uaeThey help collect information in a structured format
  • adhd assessmentsParents, teachers or partners may sometimes complete forms too
  • adhd assessment UKForms support the process but do not diagnose ADHD alone
  • adhd assessment united statesA clinician must still interpret them in the full clinical context
Will the assessment ask about my childhood? +

Yes, very often. Because ADHD is considered a neurodevelopmental condition, clinicians usually look for evidence that symptoms were present in childhood, even if they were not recognised at the time. This does not mean you must have had a childhood diagnosis — many adults are only identified later in life. Childhood evidence may come from your own memories, family accounts, school reports or other records. If recall is limited, the clinician will consider the full picture using whatever background information is available.

  • adhd assessment spainChildhood history is usually an important part of assessment
  • adhd assessment gibraltarADHD is expected to have started earlier in life
  • adhd assessment franceA childhood diagnosis is not required
  • adhd assessment germanySchool experiences are often discussed
  • adhd assessment australiaBackground information can come from more than one source
Do I need school reports or old records? +

Old records are not always essential, but they can be very helpful. School reports, teacher comments and earlier notes can provide useful evidence about concentration, behaviour and organisation in childhood. Lack of paperwork does not automatically stop an assessment going ahead — specialists can still use interviews, family input, questionnaires and current history to make a clinical judgement. It is best to bring any records you do have, but not to worry if you cannot find them.

  • adhd assessment uaeOld school records can be useful supporting evidence
  • adhd assessmentsThey may help show symptoms were present in childhood
  • adhd assessment UKNot having them does not automatically block assessment
  • adhd assessment united statesAdults and children may both benefit from old reports where available
  • adhd assessment spainClinicians use multiple sources of evidence, not just paperwork
Will you speak to my parents, partner or another family member? +

Sometimes. Additional information from parents, partners or another family member can be very useful, especially when the clinician needs help understanding childhood symptoms or current day-to-day difficulties. For children, parent and school input is often central. For adults, a partner or parent may sometimes be asked to provide background, particularly if childhood history is unclear. However, outside input is not always mandatory — a skilled specialist can still assess ADHD using the information available.

  • adhd assessment gibraltarFamily or partner input can be helpful
  • adhd assessment franceIt is especially useful for childhood history
  • adhd assessment germanyParent input is often central for children's assessments
  • adhd assessment australiaAdults may still be assessed without an informant
  • adhd assessment uaeThe clinician will decide what extra information is helpful
What happens after the assessment is completed? +

After the assessment, the clinician will usually explain the outcome and outline the next steps. If ADHD is diagnosed, the next steps may include treatment discussions, medication review, behavioural support, school or workplace recommendations, and follow-up planning. If ADHD is not diagnosed, the clinician should still explain why and may suggest another pathway if a different condition seems more likely. A good assessment should leave the person with clarity, not confusion.

  • adhd assessmentsThe clinician should explain the outcome clearly
  • adhd assessment UKYou may receive a letter or written summary
  • adhd assessment united statesIf ADHD is diagnosed, treatment and support may be discussed
  • adhd assessment spainIf ADHD is not diagnosed, another explanation may be considered
  • adhd assessment gibraltarThe process should end with clear next steps
Can I book an ADHD assessment privately? +

Yes, many people book an ADHD assessment privately, often to access faster appointments than NHS pathways currently allow. Private assessment is also popular internationally — our professional consultation service is available across 40 countries including the UK, USA, Australia, UAE, Gibraltar, France, Germany and Spain. The same standards still apply: the assessment should be carried out by a properly qualified specialist and follow recognised diagnostic criteria. See our ADHD assessment cost guide for full pricing.

  • adhd assessment franceADHD assessments can often be booked privately
  • adhd assessment germanyPrivate access may offer faster or more flexible appointments
  • adhd assessment australiaThe assessor should still be a qualified specialist
  • adhd assessment uaeThe assessment should follow recognised clinical standards
  • adhd assessmentsIt is worth checking what documentation and follow-up are included
When will I get my results? +

For our online screening assessment, results appear on screen immediately upon completion. For a formal clinical assessment, results may be given verbally at the end of the appointment, followed by a written report, or the clinician may issue a written outcome after reviewing all information gathered. A proper result should explain why the decision was made — not just provide a score or a yes-or-no answer.

  • adhd assessment UKOur online results appear instantly on screen
  • adhd assessment united statesClinical results may be given at the appointment or afterwards
  • adhd assessment spainSome services provide a verbal outcome and a written report
  • adhd assessment gibraltarTiming can depend on whether extra information still needs review
  • adhd assessment franceClients can ask in advance how and when results will be shared
Will I get a written diagnostic report? +

In many cases, yes. A written report is a common and important part of a formal ADHD assessment. It provides a clear record of the clinician's findings, the evidence considered, the diagnostic decision, and any recommendations for treatment or support. A good written report can be very useful beyond the diagnosis itself — helping with school support, university arrangements, workplace adjustments, medication planning and follow-up care.

  • adhd assessment germanyMany services provide a written report or summary letter
  • adhd assessment australiaReports are useful for GPs, schools, work and follow-up care
  • adhd assessment uaeA written record helps explain the diagnosis and recommendations clearly
  • adhd assessmentsReport detail can vary between providers and pathways
  • adhd assessment UKIt is reasonable to ask what documentation is included before booking
What happens if the assessment shows I do not have ADHD? +

A 'no ADHD' result can still be a useful and clinically meaningful outcome. A proper assessment is not only there to confirm ADHD — it is also there to work out whether another condition better explains the symptoms. Difficulties with concentration, restlessness, memory and organisation can also occur in anxiety disorders, depression, trauma-related conditions, autism, sleep disorders and learning difficulties. A good clinician should explain why ADHD criteria were not met and what they think may be contributing instead.

  • adhd assessment united statesA 'no ADHD' result can still provide important clarity
  • adhd assessment spainAnother condition may better explain the symptoms
  • adhd assessment gibraltarSome people show ADHD-like traits without meeting full criteria
  • adhd assessment franceA good assessor should explain why ADHD was not diagnosed
  • adhd assessment germanyThe outcome should still include guidance on next steps
What happens if I am diagnosed with ADHD? +

If you are diagnosed with ADHD, the next stage is usually about understanding the diagnosis and planning support. This may involve discussing medication, psychoeducation, behavioural strategies, school or workplace adjustments, therapy, coaching-style support, and follow-up care. Diagnosis is often a turning point because it can explain long-standing patterns that previously felt confusing or frustrating. A strong assessment pathway should lead naturally into a clear support plan. Read more about ADHD treatment options.

  • adhd assessment australiaDiagnosis should lead to a clear support and treatment plan
  • adhd assessment uaeOptions may include medication, therapy and practical strategies
  • adhd assessmentsSupport should reflect the person's age, needs and daily challenges
  • adhd assessment UKDiagnosis often helps explain long-standing difficulties
  • adhd assessment united statesFollow-up care is an important part of the pathway
Will my GP be informed of the outcome? +

In many cases, yes. It is common for the outcome of an ADHD assessment to be shared with the person's GP, especially if the result may affect medication, ongoing care or further support. NHS services often send a summary letter or report to both the patient and the GP. In private pathways, the exact process may depend on the provider and on consent arrangements. If you do not want your GP informed automatically, it is worth asking how information sharing works before the assessment takes place.

  • adhd assessment spainADHD outcomes are often shared with the GP
  • adhd assessment gibraltarThis helps with continuity of care
  • adhd assessment franceGP involvement is especially important if medication is planned
  • adhd assessment germanyPrivate services may vary in how information is shared
  • adhd assessment australiaIt is sensible to ask how consent and reporting work beforehand
Do I need a GP referral? +

Whether you need a GP referral depends on the pathway. In many NHS services, a GP referral is the usual route into ADHD assessment for adults. For children and young people, referrals may also come through schools, CAMHS or paediatric pathways. In private services, you may often self-refer directly without going through a GP first. Referral rules are often service-specific rather than universal — it is best to check the exact requirements for the provider you are considering.

  • adhd assessment uaeNHS ADHD assessments often require a GP referral
  • adhd assessmentsChildren's pathways may involve school or local specialist services
  • adhd assessment UKPrivate services often allow self-referral
  • adhd assessment united statesReferral rules can vary by provider and location
  • adhd assessment spainChecking the service's process in advance can save time
Can I use the diagnosis to access support at school, university or work? +

Often, yes. A formal ADHD diagnostic report can be useful when discussing support with a school, university, employer or occupational health service. The value of the report is that it explains the diagnosis, the functional impact, and often includes recommendations for adjustments or support strategies. In educational settings, this may help with exam support or learning needs. In workplaces, it may support conversations about reasonable adjustments. A screening result alone is usually not enough — a clinician's diagnostic report is far more useful.

  • adhd assessment gibraltarA formal report can help with school, university or workplace support
  • adhd assessment franceIt may be used to discuss adjustments and practical needs
  • adhd assessment germanyA diagnostic report is usually more useful than a screening result
  • adhd assessment australiaDifferent settings may have different documentation requirements
  • adhd assessment uaeThe report can help explain the functional impact of ADHD
Will I be offered treatment or medication after the assessment? +

If ADHD is diagnosed, you will usually be offered some form of management planning, but the exact options depend on the service and the person's needs. This may include medication, psychoeducation, behavioural support, talking therapies, school-based support or workplace strategies. Not everyone will be offered the same pathway immediately. The important point is that assessment should connect to sensible next steps and realistic options for improving day-to-day functioning. Read more about ADHD treatment.

  • adhd assessmentsDiagnosis should usually lead to some form of support planning
  • adhd assessment UKOptions may include medication, therapy and practical support
  • adhd assessment united statesTreatment is based on the person's needs and level of impairment
